Mexico vacation, enjoying the sun Part 1

Mexico vacation, enjoying the sun Part 1

We recently took a family vacation to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at the Grand Luxxe resort.  We have been afraid to travel to Mexico for the last four years because of all the reports of violence.  My in-laws talked us into joining them at their time share and oh boy are we glad we did.  First of all the resort arranges transportation to and from the airport, it was a short 15 minute drive.  We were surprised when we passed a drive-thru Starbucks on our way in!

We never left the resort so I can’t really speak to how safe the city was in general.  The parts we drove through were definitely a poorer area and we did see plenty of armed police.  We never felt unsafe at any time.  Once we arrived at the resort we never looked back though.  It was lush, beautiful, and huge!

Our room was absolutely amazing.  My in-laws upgraded their normal suite to a 2 bedroom so we could all be together.  We even had small wading pool on the deck which the kids loved!  We really enjoyed having a kitchen, we made breakfast most mornings which allowed everyone to sleep in and saved us some money too.  The property had its own grocery store and we purchased all our breakfast items as well as some lunch items from there.  We were happy to find PB&J for the kids as well as some snack items.  We could have saved money by going to a Walmart off of the property but we honestly didn’t want to deal with the hassle of it with the kids and the pool time wasted!

Our first day we were all a little tired from the traveling day and we couldn’t enter our room until 5pm, so we ended up exploring the property and then staying in the room for the night to unpack and just enjoy each others company for the evening.  We were able to order pizza to the room which was really nice.  We brought a few toys, coloring books and movie loaded iPads for the girls for the plane ride and they enjoyed these in the room on the first night.  They also took their first dip in the wadding pool on the deck.

The next day we visited the pool that was closest to our building, the Grand Luxxe Tower 4.  I am still not sure how many pools were on this property and we definitely did not get to visit them all.  I think each building had their own pools, a total of eight buildings is my math is right, but the each “pool” was really multiple pools put together.  One was even on a roof top!  I loved the pool by our building as it was a little quieter and offered some nice upgraded amenities.  The chairs by the pool were much nicer and more comfortable and they had awesome cabanas.  They offered free Popsicle and ice cream cones several times a day, someone would come around and offer to clean your sunglasses, towels were abundant and did not need to be checked out with your room number, and they had nice activities you could do right by the pool.  The girls made bracelets the first pool day.

They had a nice kids club right next door with a fun kids pool.  They also had a kids recreation room that showed movies and did arts and crafts, kids five and above could be dropped off for the activities for the day.  We never took advantage of this though so I can’t speak to this service.  Nana and Papa wanted to get the most of the kid time and quite frankly so did we.

Lego Duplo Party – Part 1

Lego Duplo Party – Part 1

Party planning, if I could figure out a way to make a career out of it I would.  I absolutely love planning parties, you pick a fun theme and the possibilities are endless.  This time the theme was chosen for me, although I love it!  We were chosen to host our first House Party, featuring Lego Duplo’s.  If you have never heard of House Party it is this awesome company that gets us the consumers, free products to try and share with our friends in exchange us sharing with our friends the free items and then talking about it on Social Media.

We received an amazing party pack from HouseParty and Lego Duplo’s featuring 6 different sets of Disney themed Legos.  The Lego Duplos are for ages 2-5, they are bigger than the standard Lego sets and my girls love to play with them.  So I highly recommend you check them out.

The party you are asked to host can be as simple as a playdate with a few snacks, but since I love my party planning I decided to turn in into a full on Lego/Jake and the NeverLand Pirates themed party.  I started by looking at my favorite place for party ideas, Pinterest.  How did we ever plan a party before Pinterest?  Simply search for your theme and voila, tons of great ideas you can do at home to make your party so much fun!

My first project I decided to try was the gift bags I found this pin on how to make gift bags that look like giant legos, how cute is that!  The instructions were from a particularly crafty mama that had alot of tools that I didn’t own and quite frankly didn’t want to buy.  I won’t lie I would love to be crafty and who knows maybe someday I will be, but for now I stick to simple projects and I improvise.

Micheal's gift bags $6.99 for 12

Micheal’s gift bags $6.99 for 12

I started off buying my bags, I found the perfect set for $6.99 for 12 bags at Micheal’s.  They were in great primary colors, just like typical Lego’s, I bought two sets for a total of 10 kids.IMG_4629

I didn’t want to buy any craft supplies to make circles, I figured it would just be another thing collecting dust.  I needed to figure out a way to make uniform circles that were approximately the correct size to make my gift bags look like Lego’s. I found it in my daughters’ metal strainer from their play kitchen, the size was perfect!  I placed the bag on a piece of cardboard to avoid damaging my table and using the strainer I traced the bottom of it with an x-acto knife.

IMG_4626I then cut out a small square of cardboard and taped it to the bag and then taped the circle to the cardboard.  This gave me the desired 3D effect I was looking for.  I tried gluing at first, but it would ruin the circle and a “wet” looking spot would show through.  The tape worked much better!

Finished Lego gift bagsHere is the finished product, the bags turned out so cute and we got many compliments on them.  In the next post I will show you some of of our favors I made for the kids.  HouseParty gave us Jake and the Neverland Pirate Stickers, Planes Lego Posters, and Lego Duplo coupon books to add to our gift bags.

Lego My JuiceI used the same process for making the bags to make my “Lego My Juice” boxes.  I used yellow construction paper, and tape on these as well.  The added bonus of having the wrapper was being able to write each kids name on their juice box.  With all the juice boxes on the table it was such a lifesaver and no wasted juice just because we didn’t know who’s it was!

In my next post I will talk about the food and favors we made.  See you then!

Netflix has added Disney!

We are big Disney fans in this house, and now Netflix has partnered to make it the exclusive US Rights holder to just released movies starting in 2016. This deal gives Netflix rights to movies from Disney’s live action and animation studios including Pixar, Marvel and Lucas films.

The best part is that they have already added some movies!  From your computer go to Just For Kids:Disney to see them all.  Here are some of the new movies that I see:

  • Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
  • Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure
  • Tinker Bell
  • Cars Toon Mater’s Tall Tales
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Fox and the Hound
  • Santa Paws
  • Spooky Buddies
  • Rescues Down Under
  • Dumbo
  • The Great Mouse Detective
  • The Aristocats
  • The Muppet Movie
  • Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally
  • Pocahontas
  • Pocahontas 2
  • The Tigger Movie
  • Tarzan and Jane
  • and lots more!

As we count down the hours to our DisneyWorld vacation I see a lot of new Disney movies in our future!
